The Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) with Youth Challenge Australia (YCA) is a program which sends young Indigenous Australians on a leadership and community development project in Vanuatu, South Pacific. | | PROGRAM IN BRIEF: | | Continent: | Australiasia (South Pacific) |  | | Development Areas: | Indigenous Youth Leadership | | | Youth Development | | | Community Development | | YCA Focused MDG: | Number 8; Global Partnership For Development | | | | | PROGRAM OVERVIEW: | | During 2010 - 2011, YCA will prepare, train and send 10 Indigenous Australian youth participants and 2 Indigenous Australian Field Staff to rural developing communities in Vanuatu. The IYLP consists of two 7 week projects, the first occurring from December 2010 to January 2011 with the second project from June 2011 to August 2011. The teams of Indigenous Youth will receive training in Australia before travelling to Vanuatu to live in a developing community for a 6 week period. The group will be made up of Indigenous Australian participants and Indigenous Australian Field Staff. During these projects, the IYLP team will have the opportunity to work with, share experiences and develop relationships with other young Indigenous Australian and local Ni-Vanuatu youth as well as various Indigenous communities in Vanuatu, South Pacific. Funded by the federal government's Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), this program provides young Indigenous Australians with the opportunity to gain valuable leadership and community development experience. | | The participation fee and all project related travel costs for IYLP volunteers and field staff are funded by FaHCSIA. Reasonable equipment, medical and other project costs are also covered. | | GET INVOLVED: | | The aim of the IYLP is to enhance the leadership and vocational skills of young Indigenous Australians through personal development, community development, work experience, education and by building cross cultural awareness and understanding. The IYLP aims to offer a development opportunity for young Indigenous Australians to be future leaders at home. | | Through involvement with the IYLP, Indigenous Australian youth will build practical skills in leadership, communication, negotiation, mediation, teamwork, project management, planning, reporting, cross cultural understanding, financial management and results management.
