| Jane Hunt - Costa Rica 2002 | Everyone thinks their volunteer project was the best and I am one of them. In December 2002 I prepared myself for the unknown and headed off to Costa Rica to volunteer and have a life changing experience. Over the next few weeks we worked really hard to get the bathroom and kitchen of the community centre done in time for our farewell party. We felt a great sense of satisfaction and achievement having come through many difficulties including scorpions and snakes in the shed we called our home, hard labour in the sweltering heat, 5 am starts, limited resources and frustration at moving rocks from one side of the hall to the other, then back again, such is life on a volunteer project. I think the most important and amazing thing was the bond we formed, not only with the community but also with each other. Having such a supportive and caring group and knowing we could count on each other just like a family was really important. Personally my life has changed. I know that whatever path I pursue, I want to do something meaningful, where I am helping people and making a difference even if it’s in a small way. |
